The Name

Pietersite is a brecciated variety of chalcedony with fibrous inclusions that create an optical effect known as chatoyancy, similar to that of tiger’s eye. Its name honors Sidney “Sid” Pieters, a Namibian mineral dealer and collector who discovered it in 1962 while prospecting near Outjo, Namibia. Upon cutting and polishing the sample, Pieters was struck by its vivid colors and swirling patterns that resembled a storm in motion. He officially registered the stone in 1964 with the British mineralogical authorities.
