KUNZITE
Kunzite is a lilac-pink gemstone variety of the mineral spodumene, an aluminum and lithium silicate. It was described by George Frederick Kunz, a mineralogist and executive of the Tiffany & Co company in New York 1. The current name of this variety was proposed by H. Charles Baskerville, as a tribute to Kunz for his contribution to its popularization as a gemstone.
Kunzite occurs in lithium-rich pegmatites, associated with elbaite tourmaline, albite, lepidolite, pollucite, and beryl. The first specimens, studied by Kunz, were found in a pegmatite in Pala, San Diego County, California (United States). Currently, specimens are still being obtained in this area, but the vast majority of those that enter the gemstone trade and collections come from the Kunar and Nuristan regions in Afghanistan. It is also found in some locations in Brazil.
