The origin of the name of this mineral, spinel, is unclear. Some experts believe that it comes from the Latin word "spinella", due to the pointed shape of its most common crystals, the octahedral ones. Others, on the other hand, believe that it derives from the Greek term "spinos", which means spark, alluding to the bright color of its red variety and its sparkling shine.
