The name derives from the Greek and means 'stained stone'.

It is often considered Chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz), but scientists also often put it in a group by itself within the quartz group because of its grainy structure, differentiating it from the fibrous structure of chalcedony.

It can contain up to 20 external materials that determine the color and appearance.
