Opal from Mexico
In Mexico there is an abundance of Opals. They have already been worked by the Aztecs. Later, Mexico was a supplier of Opal to Europe. With the Opal discoveries in Australia, it became the second Opal exporting country.
Opal extraction in Mexico is more difficult than in Australia. Being the source rock of volcanic origin and containing a lot of quartz, the miners have no choice but to use explosives, with the consequent damage to the quality of the Opal. A lot is also wasted.
There are many kinds of Opal in Mexico. This one that we present here is Opal in matrix.
The matrix is very hard and allows you to work it in jewelry without problems.
Some Opals from Mexico are prone to cracking, so after carving it is convenient to leave them for a while before putting them on the market, to check that they are stable.
